The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) sets the quality and safety benchmarks that products sold in India must meet. For many product categories, BIS certification is not optional — it is the legal prerequisite for import, manufacture, or sale. Customs will reject the shipment. The route you take depends on who you are and what you sell. Indian manufacturers who want to put the ISI Mark on a product follow Scheme I. Electronics importers and manufacturers use the CRS (Compulsory Registration Scheme) — a self-declaration system with mandatory BIS lab testing.
